A lot of people have already given you lists of companies that closed last year.

It is difficult to say which of those companies were the most important. What constitutes a ‘top’ startup? Revenue? Downloads? Number of users? The importance of a startup is a tricky thing to measure. If you choose one metric, the results, in terms of a definitive ranking, will change depending on different countries or regions or sectors. Virtually every consumer-facing publicly traded company now develops apps. The importance of these apps to the overall business (and the role these apps play) is very different across companies, however, which makes it difficult to provide a concise answer. For example a mobile gaming company which relies on revenue from the apps has a different goal than a consumer bank which offers apps as an extension of their core service.
